The Government launched its Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Strategy in July 2012 to provide practical support for disabled people who want to become MPs, councillors or other elected officials. The strategy was developed in close consultation with disability organisations, disabled people’s organisations and political parties.
We were the independent administrator of the Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund, which helped candidates with the disability-related costs of standing for election. The fund, which was open until early 2015, offered individual grants of between £250 and £20,000 to disabled people who wanted to be considered for selection as candidates for an election, or were standing for election. For more information, visit the Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund website.
We raised awareness of the fund amongst individuals and organisations, provided information about how to apply, supported applicants, assessed and processed all applications (in partnership with an independent advisory panel), handled any complaints and appeals, and paid the grants.
