The Government launched its Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Strategy in July 2012 to provide practical support for disabled people who want to become MPs, councillors or other elected officials. The strategy was developed in close consultation with disability organisations, disabled people’s organisations and political parties.
We are the independent administrator of the Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund, which will help candidates with the disability-related costs of standing for election. The fund is open until the end of March 2014 and offers individual grants of between £250 and £20,000 to disabled people who want to be considered for selection as candidates for an election, or are standing for election. For more information, visit the Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund website.
We raise awareness of the fund amongst individuals and organisations, provide information about how to apply, support applicants, assess and process all applications (in partnership with an independent advisory panel), handle any complaints and appeals, and pay the grants.
